Stay on Green - behaviour

Stay on Green - our positive way to encourage good behaviours for learning.

At Henry Maynard Primary and Nursery School we have a way of recognising outstanding behaviour through our positive behaviour system called “Stay on Green!”. All children at Henry Maynard understand that we always want to “Stay on Green” and that if they are able to meet our expectations every day they will be able to earn Green points towards our whole class Green point total which enables us to have special rewards as a whole class.

Children can collect green points together as a class so that we can have a whole class reward, for example having “green time”.    By working together collectively, our children understand the importance of helping each other to make the right choices and to follow our school rules so they can do their very best learning and enjoy our creative curriculum.

We know that every child at Henry Maynard is more than capable of showing excellent behaviour for learning and that by behaving in the right way they can become engaged learners.    That is why we always want our school to be a consistency “green” school, so we can do the very best learning we possibly can! Everybody wants to “Stay on Green” even the teachers!

Our school values of Ambition, Creativity and Community are recognised in celebration assembly every week.  Maybe a child has been an outstanding friend, or perhaps has shown excellent behaviours for learning or maybe they did something exceptionally kind.

Achieving a Gold award is the ultimate reward! These awards are given out half termly. Achieving these special awards means that they haven’t just been consistently “green”, but that they have exceeded all expectations and have done something totally amazing.Pupils have their name is displayed in the Golden Book.    Children will even get to place their name on a special Golden Tree!

Unfortunately, sometimes we can all make the wrong choices and at Henry Maynard, we try not to dwell on this too much.    If children make the choice not to do the right thing, we work hard to encourage them to make positive choices by using praise, redirecting their choices or using a range of other strategies.   If a child still finds it really tricky to do the right thing or follow an instruction, there are consequences to their actions and their names may move to the Blue, Yellow or Red zone.

Children are given every opportunity to put things right before any of these colours are given and there is continual encouragement to enable children to make the choice to “Stay on Green”.   If children do go to any of these colours, we encourage them to get back to “green” as quickly as possible.

During our learning time children learn all about themselves and others through our Personal, Social and Emotional curriculum. This continual learning and awareness of how our actions affect us, enables children to develop an excellent understanding of how to make the right choices.   Children are encouraged to understand that their behaviour is their own choice and so they can make decisions about how they behave!

We teach children strategies and techniques to help them make the positive choices and to cope and manage their feelings and emotions when things don’t go right, which is when we can all sometimes make the wrong choice.   Through this encouragement and learning together, we can all help each other “Stay on Green” It is always our choice which colour we end up on each day!   At Henry Maynard Primary and Nursery we are all going for GOLD!!!

Empowering our children
We are confident about our management of pupil behaviour within the school.    We have a shared vision of empowering the whole school community based on respect and a climate of trust and mutual consideration.   We believe that in order for children to become successful learners within a happy, safe and secure environment we need to foster appropriate attitudes.

The school environment

The school environment plays a central role in the children’s social and emotional development.   Adults encountered by the children at school have an important responsibility to model high standards of behaviour at all times.

In school we work towards standards of behaviour that are based on the basic principles of honesty, respect, consideration, and responsibility. When children are following school rules and behaving in an appropriate way, we say that they are showing ‘green behaviour’.    Our expectation is that everyone in the school community will aim to show this behaviour at all times and we all help and support each other to do this.

How does Stay on Green Work?

  • We have a chart in each classroom and all pupils have a pocket with their name on.
  • All pupils start with a green card in their pocket every day.
  • If pupils make positive individual choices about their behaviour or effort the teacher may award the child green points that are saved collectively as a class for special rewards.
  • If a child does something exceptional, a child may be awarded with the Headteacher award at the end of the half term.    Children need to display exceptional behaviour and work ethic in order to achieve these rewards and the whole class will acknowledge this achievement.
  • If pupils make negative individual choices the teacher or TA tried strategies to avoid the child moving onto one of the colours.   If we can't help the child stay on green, the teacher inserts the appropriate card. If they continue with these choice, the teacher or TA move the appropriate card down the blue, then yellow and then red. This acts as a clear indicator to the child that he/she will need to consider their behaviour, and make positive changes to get back to green.     Staff are always working to support a child to stay on green and will give multiple opportunities to do so.     For this reason there should be very few blue, yellow or red cards given.

Each week, children may be chosen for the school values award.   This award is given for exceptional behaviour or learning and is presented to the child during the Celebration Assembly on Friday.
