Henry Maynard Primary School seeks to foster confident, proactive learners who possess the transferable skills and decision-making capabilities required to succeed in the education system and beyond, into adult life.
Opportunities to use the core skills with which children have been equipped offer them the chance to develop their own logical and methodical approaches to problems, as well as encouraging perseverance and determination as positive personality traits.
Problem Solving at school
Our Foundation Stage curriculum is largely child led, allowing children to explore a range of practical tasks independently and as part of a group. Teachers seek to consolidate and further children's understanding through the setting of challenges and tasks that reinforce these independent learning experiences.
In KS1 and KS2 all Maths lessons are expected to include an element of problem solving; this, for example, may come in the form of a contextual problem, investigative task or the exploration of different processes to reach a given end. Teachers use White Rose, NCTEM and NRich resources to provide our children with the opportunity to develop problem solving skills such as: working systematically, visualising, trial and improvement, conjecturing and generalising and spotting patterns.
Problem solving in the Wider Curriculum
The Computing curriculum has been rewritten for this academic year, with coding now featuring more heavily throughout all age groups. All children at Henry Maynard will this year be taught coding, using programmes such as Scratch, Hopscotch and a variety of apps. These lessons will develop problem solving skills in students as well as developing the skills necessary for a future heavily dependent on ICT.
