Rationale:
At Henry Maynard Primary School, Communication, Language and Literacy (CLLD) is at the heart of the curriculum. We believe that all children should be given the opportunity, through quality first teaching, to achieve a high level of literary knowledge, skill and understanding that enables them to have access to the full range of the curriculum with confidence, and enables them to become effective communicators. We aim to provide a language rich environment that promotes a culture of reading and writing across the school and allows children to express themselves creatively and imaginatively. The skills that children develop in English are linked to, and applied in, every subject of our curriculum.
CLLD strands:
Speaking and listening skills will be developed through every day teaching and learning across all subject areas. Children will be taught to adapt language to suit different purposes and audiences, and to speak with clarity and confidence. They will learn to listen attentively and respond appropriately during conversation.
Grammar teaching will take place across reading, writing and spelling lessons; however, it will also be necessary to teach it discretely to cover the set skills on the yearly overview. Children will be taught specific grammatical terminology as identified on the termly English overviews.
Writing skills* will be taught 4 times a week using elements of the Talk 4 Writing approach: immersion, imitation and innovation.
Reading* will be taught through whole class reading and phonic sessions (using Little Wandle)
Handwriting* will be taught discretely once a week (using the Letter joins scheme) and practised daily as part of English or phonics lessons.
Spellings* will be taught discretely once a week (following Little Wandle or Spelling Shed), practised daily through handwriting practise and reinforced at every opportunity.
